Apple just released their Mac Studio this week, but what about the Mac mini that will get a redesign? Well, that is another story.
I believe the 2022 Mac mini that's soon replacing the M1 Mac mini will get a redesign with a plexi-glass top. According to 9to5mac, this model is codenamed J473 that will be powered by the M2 chip, the first chip in the M2 Family.
The M2 Chip (codenamed "Staten") is based on the A15 Bionic chip which should get 8 CPU cores but 2 additional GPU cores, resulting to have 10 GPU cores. The performance cores are codenamed "Avalanche" and efficiency cores are codenamed "Blizzard". And its good news is that it is nearing completion, which I believe should be released as early as this WWDC22 or October of this year.
9to5mac also reported that Apple was supposed to introduce a high end Mac mini powered by the M1 Pro or M1 Max chip, and as I believe, with a redesign or a space gray chassis but ended up becoming scrapped to make way for the Mac Studio.
Now, Apple is expected to be working on a high end Mac mini (codenamed J474) that features the M2 Pro chip that will have 12 CPU cores and the same 16 GPU cores but unfortunately, will not replace the Mac Studio OR the 2018 Intel Mac mini. But given that the Mac Studio has already been introduced and is made between the Mac Pro and Mac mini, I doubt this will ever be released.
And at this time, Apple has no current plans to release an M2 Max / M2 Ultra powered Mac Studio. Fortunately I believe this should be updated over the years and the next Mac Studio should be released in 2024.
