Apple is currently working on a crash-detection feature for iPhones and Apple Watches.

According to Wall Street Journal’s paywall report, Apple plans to roll out a crash detection feature for iPhones and Apple Watches next year likely for iOS 16 and WatchOS 9.

This feature works by if an Apple device detects any car accidents via sensors (e.g accelerometer) to find out you are in a car accident, you can choose to call 911 which automatically calls after a few seconds if there is no response or choose not to incase its a false alarm. This is similar to how the fall-detection system works but also available on an iPhone.

To make the system more accurate and to prevent false alarm, Apple has collected shared data from iPhone and Apple Watch users.
