We are nearing the end of Apple's 2 year plan to transition all of the Intel Macs over to Apple Silicon. Apple recently announced the last chip in the M1 family (M1 Ultra), which means M2 is probably coming soon. To learn more about the M1 Ultra, click here.

M2 MacBook Air

We are expecting Apple to release a completly redesigned MacBook Air when the M2 model comes out. While analyst Ming-Chi Kuo speculates there will be an M1 chip in the MacBook Air, most people believe there will be an M2 chip. Also, it would make sense for Apple to use one.

According to 9to5Mac, we will see the M2 chip in the MacBook Air. The codename of the MacBook Air is J413, and we can expect to see it this fall.

M2 MacBook Pro

9to5Mac's sources say we will be getting no new redesign with the base level, so it will have the same design as last one. Apple has been considering taking away the Pro naming, which would make sense considering it’s almost the same as the M2 MacBook Air.

This Mac won’t have any Pro chips like the M2 Pro or M2 Max. Right now, we can expect to see both of these laptops this fall, or possibly at WWDC.

Also, these M2 Macs will be based off of TSMC’s 4nm process which should allow better efficiency. According to Mark Gurman, Apple already has an M2 13” MacBook Pro, 24” iMac, and Mac Mini in development and plans to launch some more Macs around May/June.

The current M1 chip is built on TSMC’s 5nm process and an 8-core CPU and a 7/8-core GPU, and the M2 will have an 8-core CPU but have 9 or 10 core GPU options.
